While Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) has become largely synonymous with Systems Modeling Language v1 (SysML®) , they are different things! SysML is not alone a methodology, it is a general purpose (primarily graphical) language in which the paradigms and idioms of modern model-based systems engineering approaches can be implemented.
Perhaps the most important common characteristic of all Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approaches is the move away from document-intensive systems engineering to a fully integrated model-based approach that combines requirements engineering, structural modelling, behavioural modelling, functional modelling, interface specification, mathematical modelling, signal flow modelling, physical interaction modelling, and constraint mathematics, into a single model shared across teams under the principle of Single Source of Truth (SSOT).
Webel IT Australia is working in earnest on mapping selected parts of older systems engineering standards and strategies (such as those advocated in the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook and ISO15288) to MBSE with SysML.
